Sanjhi revisited august 2017

Sanjhi, the art of hand cutting stencils from paper to create patterns on the floor, is believed to have its origins in the city of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.  Since the past several decades DCC has had a long term commitment to developing Sanjhi.
Starting with the first exhibition Kagaz, DCC has conceived and organised  similar exhibitions with a view to showcasing how the craft can be used in larger formats suitable for interiors and public space. Many new concepts have been explored in order to expand the scope of this craft and make it suitable for contemporary interiors. The design themes have been chosen carefully to reflect and echo traditional Sanjhi patterns of stylised trees and Mughal jaalis. In an exciting experiment, sanjhi has been combined with hand painting in the pichwai style.
