Craft Process: Cane & Bamboo Furniture


Bamboo grows all over the country and cane and bamboo have been used by societies for a variety of uses: carrying, winnowing, as containers, for fencing, roofing, as fishing traps etc. Cane is a creeper that grows in tropical forests. Cane is mostly used in furniture making and in binding and securing bamboo products.

Overview of techniques involved:

  • Sourcing and Transporting raw materials and creation of wax model


  • Preparing the wood

  1. The first step in this process is to prepare the bamboo/cane.

  2. Simultaneously the final design drawign is also prepared.


  • Structuring and Framework

The second step involves working on the frame work and finalising the same


  • Filling

The inner hollows of the frame work is now either woven/or attached and filled in.


  • Assembling & Securing

The edges and corners of the completed furniture is now finished and secured.


  • Finishing

The surface of the polish is stained, varnished and finished.
